Main Light: The main light is the smaller light on the right, next to my subject, it shine son the face and because of its angle it creates a shadow. It helps create shorter shadows as the light is lower down. The main light is also very intense. Fill light: The fill light is on the left of my subject. compared to the main light this light is much less intense. It is called the fill as it ids used to fill in the shadow made by the main light. The fill is not meant to be as powerful as the main. Hair light: The hair light, is the tallest light, pointed towards the hair. This light helps balance out the image. Again this light is not as intense was the main. |
Myra Greene is an American artist, focusing on mostly photography. She had done many projects, such as character recognition which is what we are studying.
The character recognition project take photos of the different parts of the face, and Myra displayed her work on black glass ambrotypes. Myra uses a photographic process linked to the times of ethnographic classification. Greene explains:“Confronted with an upswell of bigotry both personal and public, I was forced to ask myself, ‘What do people see when they look at me? Am I nothing but Black? Is that skin tone enough to describe my nature and expectation in life? |
|
For this task, I had to put my images into photoshop, after this I made my images black and white. Then I took Myra Greene's images and used the rough texture marks around the image to almost mimic the process Myra used. I did this by placing the Myra Greene image over the top of my image, then used the layer mask feature in photoshop, and rubbed out the bits of Myra's image I didn't need and kept the rough texture marks on the border. I did this by changing the opacity and size of pen I was using the allow me the best result. I did this for 3 images.

Lens cultureValerie Kabis currently works and lives in Moscow, Russia. She focus's on how shapes are made by limiting light. She experiments with shadows, contrast and variations in focus. Her images are on the right. The series of photos she took are dark and almost gothic.

For this I took the old film camera's and brought it into the dark room so I could load in the photographic paper. Once this was done, I went outside and took a photo of my subject experimenting with different exposure times, after many failed attempts I found 10 seconds created the clearest image. After the photo was taken I developed it as usual. Then took a photo of print, after this I went back into the dark room and made a sandwich print of my image, creating a positive image.

Lewis Khan took photos of a friend, a neighbour, a familiar face in the street. Georgetown is a view into the life of south London resident, George. During a period of his adolescence that saw playing football in the street as a daily ritual ,Khan states that George and himself often shared the same space. Frequently they would meet with a simple nod, more frequently a hello, and on occasion George would join in for a kick about. Georgetown is informed by six years of these impromptu and informal meetings in the street, usually the same one. The project uses not just portraits to display a persons characteristics but the environment they live in too, showing a portrait is not just one photo but a collective of photos that tell that persons story.

For this task I took inspiration from George town by Lewis Khan. For this project I chose to take photos of my dad. I took both portraits of him and things he loves and things I think represent him in some way. Such as a rugby top as he is a big fan of rugby. I took around 15 images and think that they all say something different about him.

Ben Watts is a British photographer who left the UK to explore New York. The project of his that we are focusing on is the big up portraits.
Big up is a real representation of the American youth and shows gives us an insight to the culture of the youth. Ben Watts started this collection in 1990 when he came to New York from the Sydney College of Arts. Fascinated by the faces and energy of New York’s urban youth culture, the book started as a collection of personal snapshots that continued to build over a dozen years. For our task we took inspiration from Ben Watts, and we made a collage of Mahammad Ali, I tried to make the collage full of colours and life like Ben Watts work. My work is displayed below. |

-For my independent development I aim to merge Lewis Khan and Ben Watts work. My aim is to take photograph of London and the people that live in it, and their environment, and photos of my family or friends and turn that into a collage. For my first development I used images of my friends that I had taken at parties recently, and labelled it 'London at night' the photos I took are mostly of groups of people. I wanted to do this as it is similar to Ben Watts, and I wanted to give an insight to the youth in London and did this by using the environment and friends I had around me.
-For this task I printed out photos I took, in different sizes then used colours and different textures to almost mimic that lively feel of Ben Watt's collages. |
|
-For my second development I decided to show of London but instead of using my local area I went to the South bank and Leake Street to capture the culture of art and graffiti in London and also in the South bank I took picture of skateboarders to go with my theme. I also went to Leake Street to help add some colour into my collages. I used my phone to take images of skateboarders and their environment.
-After I had taken my images I printed them in different sizes, cutting them out and creating a collage with them. I wanted to take photos of this as I think it is interesting and is a good representation of London. This collage was inspired by Ben Watts. |
